the Favela Painting Project by Haas&Hahn
Haas&Hahn is the working title of artistic duo Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn. They started working together in 2005, when they filmed a documentary about hip hop in the favelas of Rio and São Paolo for MTV. Inspired by this visit, they embarked on a journey to bring outrageous works of art to unexpected places, starting with painting enormous murals in the slums of Brazil together with the local youth. Over the last years the duo spent many months realizing giant murals on a quest towards their goal, to paint an entire favela.
Jeroen Koolhaas (Rotterdam, 1977) studied graphic design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven and has been working as a freelance audio-visual designer and illustrator for the New Yorker magazine since graduation. He uses his graphic talent to create the designs used in the Favela Painting Project.
Dre Urhahn (Amsterdam, 1973), studied chinese language and culture and worked as a journalist, copywriter, and art-director. He has set up successful companies specializing in different fields, from event management to television production. Here he built up a production background used in the organization of the Favela Painting Project.
Firmeza Foundation In 2007 Haas&Hahn started the Firmeza Foundation. A dutch-based Foundation, built to "support the creation of striking artworks in unexpected places. It collaborates with local people to use art as a tool to inspire, create beauty, combat prejudice and attract attention."

2010/04/29 'Praca Cantao', A square, filled with radiating rays of color, 7000 m2, painted with 25 local youth over a period of 2 months in the community of Santa Marta, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (realized with AkzoNobel)
2008/10/15 'Rio Cruzeiro', A street turned into a Japanese tattoo-like river with Koi. 2000 m2, painted with 5 local youth over a period of 8 months in the community of Vila Cruzeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (designed with Rob Admiraal)
2008/04/02 'Terra Encantada', A Wall filled with fantasy animals. 50 m2, painted in 1 day together with 50 children at their social center in the community of Terra Encantada, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
2007/02/01 ‘Kid with Kite’, Three houses at the center soccer field, turned into a monument, depicting a young boy with a kite. 150m2, painted with 3 local youth over the period of 3 months in the community of Vila Cruzeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

2010/12/05 'O Morro', 80 painted canvasses put together on a wooden frame to form a huge installation depicting a painted hill at the GGG exhibit during ArtBasel Miami, commissioned by SushiSamba.
