In 2010, Haas&Hahn returned to Rio to realize a larger project in the Santa Marta favela. The project required a simple design as it involved painting over 34 houses, covering an area of 7000 square metres at the central square of Praça Cantão. This resulted in a design with an explosion of pastels rays of sunshine, which caused CNN to quote Praça Cantão as ‘one of the ten most colorful places in the world’.
The project involved training the local youth in painting and employed 25 locals to achieve the project completion within a month. the main objective was to create huge community art that serves as a catalyst for the improvement of housing and neighbourhoods. By empowering the people and bringing colour and joy to these people, Haas&hahn hoped to ignite personal and societal change on all levels.
